What if I told you that everything about you that people see from the outside, is a product of your thoughts?
Your external world actually reflects your inner world. A lot of people have a tough time accepting this. They’d rather imagine their lives as strictly products of their circumstances. Maybe they would blame it on their upbringing or childhood experiences. Or the amount of money they are making or the number of resources they have access to.
In other words, they would rather point the finger at everything and anything except themselves. I really can’t say I blame them. Think about it, if you say that your external world reflects your inner world, where does that lead to?
Well, it leads to the uncomfortable conclusion that you are responsible for your life. There’s that word again that people seem to hate – responsibility. Sure enough, once the conversation turns towards this awkward topic, another inconvenient idea comes up.
People run away when they hear the concept of discipline. I’m telling you in our modern world, responsibility and discipline are not exactly popular. We live in a world where people order pizza and expect it delivered in fifteen minutes or they want their money back. They want their pizza absolutely free.
We live in a world where we whip out our mobile devices when we do our shopping, and we expect the package that we ordered right at our doorstep in two days or less. We live in a world of instant divorce and hookups, thanks to apps like Tinder.
This is the world where we live. The more we take advantage of all these modern conveniences, the more our minds change. This has a serious effect on our values, and this is why ideas like your external world being a result of your internal choices in thoughts and habits seem so outdated.
In fact, in the eyes of many people, these ideas are even threatening. This is why it’s really important if you want to change your life for the better, to tap into your ability to respond to your world. It is not a foregone conclusion. Just because you have responded the same way all these years doesn’t mean that you should stay in that pattern.
At the end of the day, it’s all about reclaiming your power of choice. If you do not like who you see in the mirror, and you don’t like how your life has turned out, you actually have a lot more power over the situation than you give yourself credit for.
It comes down to what you choose, and I’m talking about your thoughts. You think your thoughts are powerless. Thoughts are just ideas. Everybody has thoughts, so how can these thoughts change your life? After all, your life consists of things that you can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. You convince yourself your life is real while your thoughts are not.
Well, you’re more than welcome to think that way. The more you think that your thoughts are just illusions and are really worth nothing, the more you will continue to live a life of frustration, struggle, and helplessness. However, the moment you start believing that your thoughts actually have power and that they are the raw ingredients for reality, then you start turning things around. You start talking and behaving differently.
The 3 Core Pillars of Mentalism
The idea of mentalism is fast catching on. A lot of this has to do with the increasing popularity and notoriety of cognitive-behavioral therapy. It’s easy to understand why people are looking for alternatives in making changes in their lives. After all, taking chemical compounds to treat depression, anxiety, personality, or mood disorders, is getting old quickly.
It turns out that when you become chemically dependent on these substances, your responsiveness starts to decline. Eventually, we reach a point where you’re not really getting the kind of results that you use to.
This truly highlights the limitations of physical or chemical solutions to what otherwise would be personal challenges. These are challenges of self-definition, a sense of purpose, and taking control of our personal ability to choose our reality. No drugs can make these challenges go away.
Unfortunately, the global psychopharmaceutical industry generates multi-billion dollars in sales every year. It requires a lot of mythology to explain its existence. People are given all sorts of stories so they can continue to spend money annually to keep the industry afloat.
Sadly, this all leads to one place. In the United States, the suicide rate is going up despite people being overmedicated. They are making more money, but there are now more and richer people killing themselves even with millions of dollars in the bank.
We have reached an existential crisis precisely because we have relied too much on physical and chemical solutions to a problem that would otherwise be a personal mental issue. In other words, this involves you taking control of your mind.
This is why mentalism is becoming so popular because it’s one hundred percent chemical-free. You don’t have to consult with a psychiatrist, psychologist, or any kind of healthcare bureaucrat. Instead, this is all about you becoming honest with yourself and understanding the power that is in you. Let me make that clear. This is about understanding the power you already have.
In other words, it is already present. It’s not something that you need to acquire. It’s not something that you become. It’s not something you aspire to. It’s already there. This is why it’s really important to wrap your mind around the three core pillars of mentalism. That’s because these might allow you to reach breakthroughs you have previously thought were impossible.
Maybe you’re struggling with your relationship. Or feel that you’re not making as much money as you should. Or feel that you’ve wasted your life pursuing a career that ended nowhere. Maybe you have all sorts of guilt, phobias, or fears trying to get out from under the crushing gravity of your pride.
Mentalism can help you with whatever personal issues you are struggling with. For that to happen, however, you must have a clear understanding of its three core pillars. You have to believe that these pillars apply to you.
Pillar #1 Our World Turns On Our Minds
The first thing that you have to understand about mentalism is that it rejects physicalism. It tells you that your life is not about your external circumstances. Your life cannot be treated with drugs. Your life cannot be treated with either money or any material. Instead, it’s all in your head. Your external reality simply reflects your inner reality.
Pillar #2 Our Minds Run On Habits
The reason people seem stuck in their lives or feel that they cannot make any permanent changes is that they are operating habitually. In other words, they only need to perceive certain things. And they can’t help but act a certain way. This is a habit.
Just as a smoker would habitually light up right after they have a heavy meal, a person with negative mental habits would engage in the worst possible behavior or speech when triggered by certain things. They can’t help it. It just almost automatically, kicks into gear each time.
However, what they don’t understand is that they choose their habits. Believe it or not, for you to even have a habit in the first place, you must have put yourself in a situation where you’re repeating that action at least a few times before it kicks in.
This also applies to break habits. Our minds run on habits, regardless. If we can choose our habits, we can also break existing negative ones and switch to those that are beneficial to us.
Pillar #3 We Always Have A Choice
This is the kicker. The first two pillars are difficult enough as they are. Most people would have a tough time understanding and accepting the first two pillars. Given enough time, however, most people will eventually warm up to those ideas and believe them.
It takes a lot more work for this third pillar because this is where things get real. If we say to ourselves that we always have a choice, then it begs these questions: Why are you choosing the kind of life you have now? Why are you choosing to become measurable? Why are you choosing to become powerless? Why are you choosing to become poor, unattractive, unappealing, weak, insignificant, and anonymous?
Now, these are hard questions. Most people would rather run away from them. If they can’t run away, they would come up with excuse after excuse for living the lives they have chosen. Ultimately, it’s all a choice.
You don’t have to live your life the way you are living. It doesn’t matter what your background is. It doesn’t matter whether you think you’re a victim or not.
If you truly believe that you have a choice, then you would choose something else. This is what makes this hard to accept. But if you really want mentalism to work for you, you have to accept this. You have to let it sink in and become part of your everyday reality.
